Detroit & The American City Symposium Recap
To mark The Kresge Foundation's centennial on June 11, 2024, local and national experts joined us in Detroit to examine the city as a place of deep history with immense possibilities. Participants grappled with the question of how to make health, climate resilience, repair, joy and opportunity attainable for all Detroiters.
A roster of speakers including Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, filmmaker dream hampton, Academy-Award winning production designer Hannah Beachler and many more reminded us all that the future is not a preordained destination, but a consequence of the choices we make today. "We are the curators of our own time capsule, and the legacy we leave behind is yet to be written," says Kresge Managing Director, Detroit, Wendy Lewis Jackson.

We are facing a homeless crisis as rents have increased more than 50% in the first half of this year. The facility where families in need could receive social services and financial assistance such as welfare and Florida Food Assistance Program was sold. A luxury apartment tower is being built on the site, right now. I have seen families with pre-school age children standing outside a small building on Grand Ave. (former PAL boxing club) in the hot Florida sun waiting to get in to request assistance. This building is several blocks away from from the very large facility with adequate parking that was torn down to make way for the apartment tower. Miami has a long history of severe income disparity and at times has been mentioned as the city with the worst income disparity in the country. The Section 8 housing voucher program has been suspended this year at the Worst Possible Time in the history of the program. We have had low income housing projects funded with 10s of millions of dollars with no significant completed affordable housing complexes after some older ones, in total disrepair because of underfunded maintenance, were condemned. It reminds me of New Orleans where affordable housing was closed down never to reopen. The message there was clear; if you are out of N.O. and don't have significant don't come back. If you are low paid and don't have significant funds you will be priced out. Take the hint and leave ahead of the curve. What is the message for the working poor and working class that do not own property in Miami? I am retired and would volunteer if I could assist in the effort to get affordable housing for people in Miami.

You can only go so far with "Arts and Culture" strategies. You need to induce other larger companies to move there. That is high tech, finance, insurance, and other larger businesses need to move there.
